Greetings, Readers!
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Think on These Things, the online publication of CivicSophisticate that will deposit a blend of history, culture, and arts content into your inbox! By way of introduction, let’s set our backdrop.
Why CivicSophisticate and Why Now?
CivicSophisticate exists to educate the populace. A society cannot endure without citizens who know how to think, learn, and engage with accuracy and understanding. A business cannot succeed without employees who align around a shared mission. A community cannot flourish without families and neighbors who know how to get along despite differences.
Born out of a burden to address the growing division in our shared communities, workplaces, and nation, our goal is to equip people to think with complexity and engage with civility. Ultimately, our vision is to cultivate a society that values and pursues Truth, Beauty, and Excellence—the natural outcome of which is a more educated and elevated approach to civic engagement.
To put it plainly, it's time to raise the bar.
The Problem:
Debate has been replaced with sound bites. Citizens are afraid to engage in authentic conversation, and too many fall prey to echo chambers and shallow thought.
Declining standards of literacy and historical competency plague society from the classroom to the board room.
Divisions increasingly rage in mainstream media and social media, flooding into workplaces, schools, churches, chambers of commerce, congress, city streets, and even families.
At CivicSophisticate, we believe there is a better way to tackle these permeating problems.
The Solution:
Our mission is to build an educated and civil society through:
a revival of critical thought,
the study and appreciation of history,
and the enjoyment of culture and the arts.
Why Think on These Things?
Think on These Things is CivicSophisticate’s online community where we share elements of Truth, Beauty, and Excellence through literature, music, art, history, and the like. Its name is derived from an uplifting verse in the Bible: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
That is the course ahead. You can expect uplifting content that bolsters your knowledge and feeds your soul—and hopefully challenges you to dig deeper more than occasionally. Together, we can raise the bar.
Thank you for coming along for the journey!
